  • The Voice over IP market is expected to exceed $30 billion dollars this year with rapid growth from year to year. Though the technology has greatly matured in recent years and months, organizations must proceed with care to avoid the quality problems that plague many implementations.

    Latency

    When a packet is sent across a network, it takes a certain amount of time to pass through each switch or router in the path. When the aggregate of this time becomes too great, the call quality deteriorates and the sound becomes choppy or is lost altogether. Many users have learned by experience that not all network equipment is created equal and that the design of the network can greatly affect voice traffic even though the bandwidth utilization is relatively low.

    Quality of Service (QoS)

    Adding voice and other streaming media to client/server networks can be problematic due to the spikes in bandwidth utilization caused by file transfers. When implemented correctly, enterprise-class QoS features in network management can greatly reduce these issues by prioritizing the traffic sent over network links.

    Power-over-Ethernet (PoE)

    Deploying feature-rich phones throughout the network is easier with PoE implemented to carry the phone power over its Ethernet cable. However, care must be taken to not mix incompatible equipment in order to avoid possible damage to expensive gear.


    These and other crucial points will be covered in this class to help attendees become proficient in implementing VoIP technologies.


    Implementing Key Features

    This training will provide hands-on experience on how to take advantage of many features including:

    Call Forwarding – Important calls can be forwarded from extension to extension or even to a cell phone. Automated Attendant – Even a small business can gain an enterprise-class appearance with timed voice menus and direct extension dialing.

    Email Voice Mail – No more dialing into old systems. Voice mails can be sent automatically to the appropriate email addresses.

    Call Parking – Got a call for someone else? Park it and let the intended caller pick it up on any of the office phones.

    Music On Hold – Select or even record an mp3 to be played for callers on hold.



    Course Instructor

    Dr. Jay Potter, International Academy of Science, is the primary instructor for the conference. Dr. Potter has many years in networking experience. Most recently Dr. Potter has contributed to the development of the Acellus Learning System, an electronic system designed to help schools and students realize higher academic achievement. He is also a co-author of the book "WideBand Networking".
